The margarita cocktail, made with tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur has become an icon in the world of drinks and attributed a national celebration on the 22nd of February. Its history is rich and interesting, spanning several decades and crossing borders to become one of the most popular drinks in the world.
The origins of the margarita are somewhat disputed, with several different stories claiming to be the true inspiration behind the drink.
One popular story is that the margarita was first made in the late 1930s or early 1940s at a bar called Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico. According to legend, a wealthy woman named Margarita Henkel visited the bar and asked the bartender, Carlos “Danny” Herrera, to make her a drink. She was allergic to all forms of alcohol except tequila but found the tequila shots too harsh to drink straight. Herrera then combined the tequila with lime juice and triple sec and served it over ice, creating the first margarita.
Others believe that the drink was actually invented in Texas in the 1940s. A socialite named Margaret Sames claimed to have created the cocktail while hosting a party at her home in Acapulco, Mexico. She mixed tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice and served the cocktail to her guests, who loved it. The drink became known as the margarita, named after its creator.
Regardless of its origin, the margarita and, it’s national celebration, has become a classic cocktail that is enjoyed around the world. It has inspired a number of popular variations, it can be served on the rocks, in a coupette or blended with ice.
