Punch…Sharing & Drinks..

The punch trend continues to rise, encouraging consumers to experiment with new formats of shared pitchers and pails. The NY Eater blog recently defined the trend as ‘large format cocktails’ and highlighted 5 New York venues who are bringing the sharing back to drinking.

One example is Painkiller, the New York Tiki bar, and their popular “Scorpion Bowl” cocktails: assorted, large vessels filled with various combinations of fruit juices, rums, and flavoured liqueurs.

One of them, the Jolly Stomper, is served in a 64oz Collins glass. The Cradle of Life, which sells for $80, is served with an inverted lime wedge that’s been set on fire.

The Collective bar offers a “Walk of Shame Punch Bowl.” For the 2-3 person size, this prom-style punch bowl is filled with fresh berries, juices, honey syrup and Bacardi Rum. When served, the whole concoction is then topped with Martini Prosecco, tableside.

Mini-chain, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, has recently opened up in Union Square and offers all of their cocktails in either a glass or pitcher for sharing.

The Trashcan Punch,  2.5 gallon ‘high octane’ mixture of rum and fruit juices, is served table side in one gigantic mason jar (large, screw-top lidded preserving jar invented in 1858) with four to six regular size mason jars for serving.

At Xiao Ye, Eddie Huang’s new Taiwanese restaurant, a variety of punches are served in giant fishbowls. “Quarter Water” mixes rum with Vitamin Water, while their Hawaiian” blends rum with the syrupy, store-bought Hawaiian Punch.
